Readings taken by hand once in a while showed nothing wrong. With AeiX recording continuously, the power factor kept dropping below normal, and the dip followed the load. A capacitor bank that is working should hold the power factor steady, so we opened the panel.
Three of the four capacitor contactors had burnt out, and the busbar above them was scorched. The bank was barely correcting at all. Once it was repaired, the power factor came back up, before the electricity bill added a low-power-factor penalty.
